John Lehrer argues that there should be a combination of art and science to further our understanding and knowledge we have today. Combining art and science will open up new meanings and clear some things up. This “fourth culture” will allow people to find new ways of thinking to open up more doors to the questions we still do not have answers to.

Everything that John Lehrer was saying towards the end of his article about how science does not always have to be factual and realists. Art can be factual and real. People need to open their minds to allow new ideas and ways of thinking into their minds to really allow for new ideas and possibilities to arise. Nothing will change if people do not allow things to change, to allow new possibilities and combinations of two different ideas or “cultures” come together. Both science and art impact each other so hugely that back then even kind of now people do not see the impacts they have on each other. I feel like incorporating art into the sciences in school will really awaken new minds to think of the “fourth culture” instead of the first or second culture. I feel like getting this idea into young kids today will make a huge impact; not only to them for their future but even for adults today because adults learn from the young even if we do not like it.

Glossing:

Reductionism– Simplifying a complex idea/situation so much that it becomes minimal information or the basics of the idea/situation.

Epiphenomenon– Secondary to, the second arising of something during disease or phenomenon.

Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle– A key limit of knowledge of the particle at any given moment.

I have read John Lehrer’s article, “The Future of Science… Is Art?”, and wrote down some thoughts that I had while reading it, here are some of them;

  1. I think there’s a lot of insight in this comment, “Both science and art impact each other so hugely that back then even kind of now people do not see the impacts they have on each other.” In some ways and at certain points in history, is it possible that this “fourth” culture has already existed? What do you think?
