While reading Micheal Erard’s “See Through Words” I had some thoughts about what he was saying.
The second paragraph of the very first page intrigued me solely for the fact that I had no idea that creating or coming up with metaphors was a career choice. Although, there are many jobs in the world that are very unknown or hardly ever talked about because a company or someone wanted the praise of coming up with an idea or invention.
On about the third page, in the middle, I agreed with what Erard was saying about the metaphor, “English is a bottleneck.” This metaphor is not pleasant reading, saying, or hearing. It kind of gives you an odd feeling I think because it seems like it is missing something. The saying is complete but it does not feel completely whole when you first come around to it. But, as time goes on you really know what it means so you do not need “like” in the saying to know that it is complete.
In the second paragraph of the fourth page, Erard really got my attention when he talked about “the furniture in the room.” The way he describes what the furniture represents in the room makes me picture math class. You are learning something new, the teacher is helping you every step of the way and you are getting closer to the answer with guidance. As you learn and understand the material more you do not need as much help. A.k.a. the guidance is the furniture in the room and the math problem is the metaphor or room.
Your images look great. I like how you chose to incorporate them so thoughtfully into your reflection. Nice work!
You picked up on some interesting points. I thought the same thing when I read Erard’s job title. What an interesting career, no? You do a great job connecting your experiences (in a classroom) with Erard’s room/furniture metaphor. Keep that up!
