QCQ #10

Quotation: The quote that I decided to pull is located on page 240 right at the very top. “So enthralled was I by the display of the girl’s astonishing gifts that I did not notice what it was I was drinking. Looking back I can only surmise that it was some poisonous concoction of the creature’s own. That one small glass had on me the strangest effect. I was still weak from the fever which I had only just succeeded in shaking off, and that, no doubt, had something to do with the result. But, as I continued to sit, I was conscious that I was sinking into a lethargic condition, against which I was incapable of struggling.”

Comment/Connection: This quote right here really fits well with the novel because it starts to explain how Robert Holt was taken under The Beetle’s control. It is clear there is not an argument because this quote directly says the wine is what is making Lessingham so out of it. Exactly like what Robert Holt had gone through while he was under the control of The Beetle. This quote and scene in the novel are closely connected to Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief novel because in that book there is a scene where they are at a casino in Las Vegas and there are lotus desserts that drug people to the point they have no concept of time and can’t truly control what they are doing. I am not gonna lie thinking about what could possibly be in the wine leads me to think about Date Rape drugs and how they make people basically in a trance of not being able to control their body, they are out of their mind, and people take advantage of those that have taken it.

Question: After reading through this it really makes you wonder what they put in the wine. Is it made of crushed/juiced scarabs? Is it just a random mix of different things that are known to make people more willing to do things? Are items like that even a thing?
