Community Gathers at Teach-in to Learn More About Novel Coronavirus

Following up on the last article, “Pitt Instructs Students, Employees to Cancel China Travel Plans in Wake of Outbreak”, that was written up about the concerns of the school with people traveling due to the coronavirus. Some faculty and staff members of the University gathered together and held an open teach-in for people who want to know more about the coronavirus. The teach-in consisted of five speakers talking about basic information and some specifics about the virus. Some of which was how the novel coronavirus is one strand of the coronavirus family and how two “cousins” of the coronavirus have infected people in the past. But, the biggest question they are still trying to answer is how the virus spread to humans. They also discussed the number of people infected with the virus and how many research teams are trying to find a vaccine. The school would like to be one of the research groups trying to find a cure but they need a sample of the virus to do so. All of the party members of the panel all know different aspects of the virus, but they all agreed on the fact that “misinformation fueled by social media and sensational reporting” is dangerous.
