Feature Story Reflection

It was definitely an interesting experience through this writing process. To go from someone who has been told to write complete full-length paragraphs to think of the way as a reporter. I could tell through the workshops that the majority of us thought as beginner reporters because we were writing in the way of a conversation instead of a reporter. I thought it was good that we workshopped each draft to help the writer look at what they needed to work on. Myself specifically I saw that I needed to shorten my paragraphs and include more quotes throughout the story instead of in one section smushed the whole way to the bottom. As we were workshopping I really looked back on how I wrote my story and basically threw it out and restarted. I wanted to make sure that I talked about the real main points that I wanted to really show. It took a little bit of time but I feel like I got the information that I wanted in the end. I hope that I fixed the beginner’s mistakes of a reporter and have a better flowing story that is less conversational and more direct. I found that when rewriting my article that it was nice to have too many quotes because then I could look through and decide which ones would best suit the story. That also did not hurt anyone’s reputation in the professional field. I think that if I could go back I would want to get more commuter and faculty to comment to have a little bit more of a diversity. But, that is just one thing that is difficult to do because you’re not exactly sure who is a commuter and lives on campus and the commuters are only here for a certain period of time throughout the day. Not to mention it may be difficult to get comments from professors due to class schedules.
